  • Barcelona are eager to re-sign Lionel Messi and will consider selling a star to fund his transfer
  • Messi is set to become a free agent in the summer when his Paris Saint-Germain deal expires
  • Inter Milan and Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal are also interested in signing Messi in the summer

Barcelona are pushing to raise money to fund the transfer of Lionel Messi, as the Argentine forward nears the end of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Catalan club’s financial woes were the main reason Messi left the club in 2021 to pitch his tent in France, with Barcelona wanting to reunite with their former captain when he becomes a free agent.

According to SB Nation, Barcelona are considering selling French defender, Jules Kounde, who only joined the club from Sevilla last summer, to raise money to sign Messi.

Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati are on the transfer list already but the Catalan giants could even sell Raphinha, a regular starter, to get some much-needed cash.

Messi spent 17 seasons at Barcelona and remains the club’s all-time goal scorer with 672 goals, and it has been reported the 34-year-old forward fancies returning to Camp Nou in the summer.

Leage won't change for Messi

Meanwhile, Javier Tebas said La Liga would not change financial fair play rules to allow Barcelona to sign Messi this summer when he becomes a free agent, ESPN reports.

However, the president of the Spanish league did leave the door open for the forward to return to where he spent most of his playing career, winning numerous trophies.

Tebas warned Barcelona in March that they needed to cut wages or raise their transfer fees by up to €200 million, before they could consider bringing in any new players.

Barcelona to offer Messi contract

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Messi facing a massive pay cut if he decides to rejoin Barcelona in the summer, after details emerged of the proposed contract being offered to him.

The World Cup winner looks set to leave Paris Saint-Germain when his contract with the Ligue 1 club expires in the summer, with his ex-club one of the favourites to sign him.

According to reports, the deal Barcelona is set to offer Messi would see the Argentine superstar earn only a quarter of the salary he earned in his last season at Camp Nou.
