The match ended in a 3-2 thrilling win for the Red Devils, which boosted their hopes of playing in Europe next term.

Kobbie Mainoo opened the scoring for the hosts in the 31st minute after a clever assist from Bruno Fernandes.

However, Newcastle drew level through Anthony Gordon shortly after the break before Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund found the back of the net to earn United maximum points.

Onana makes Manchester United history vs Newcastle

According to @centregoals, the match saw Onana become the first Manchester United goalkeeper to face 200 shots in a single Premier League season.

The Cameroon international has endured a nightmare start to life at Old Trafford since he arrived from Inter Milan last summer.

According to Premier League, the former Ajax shot-stopper has conceded 56 goals in the division so far this season and committed one error leading to a goal.

However, it has now emerged that this is not entirely his fault, considering the number of shots he has faced.

The outrageous stat sparked reactions on X, with a number of fans expressing pity for Onana.

@VakninPL argued:

"Now people will understand how good he is."

@Elegance_Bb posted:

"Onana is a good keeper. Just the backline exposes him a lot."

@Pinnacle5787 added:

"That’s why he conceded more."

@donald_segun concluded:

"Says a lot about the team, the defenders, and the managers. Man Utd plays one of the most disjointed football in the league this season and that's why Onana faced that volume of shots."

Ten Hag warns Onana

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on ten Hag warning Onana to avoid costly errors in future games after the shot-stopper made a blunder against Sheffield United.

United were behind twice during their 4-2 victory over the Blades, with the Cameroonian criticised for a haphazard pass that allowed Jayden Bogle to score.
