  • Questions have risen on whether Manchester City can be stripped of their Premier League titles if found guilty
  • The English giants are currently under investigation due to multiple financial breaches between 2009 and 2018
  • Jose Mourinho could become a winner with Manchester United and Steven Gerrard could get the EPL title

Manchester City fans and stakeholders will be waiting with bated breath to know their fate after the club was charged with multiple counts of financial breaches.

The case is set to be determined by an independent commission with many far-reaching implications in line to be handed.

Apart from the deduction of points, paying of fines and suspension, the commission could settle on a raft of other measures that it sees fit. Social media was awash with opinions suggesting that the titles that Manchester City won during that period should be revoked.

It is probably wishful thinking but in athletics, stars have seen their titles stripped off after it was later found out they cheated their way to victory.

Has it ever happened before?

There is also no set precedent in English football of a club being stripped of titles save for when Swindon Town were relegated to the Third Division after gaining promotion to the First Division. They were found guilty of over 30 cases of illegal payment.

Former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva started the debate online by asking if he was going to be the Premier League champion. Sports Brief takes a look at who could be declared champions if City were to be stripped of their titles.

Manchester City won three Premier League titles between the said period of 2009 and 2018.

2011/2012 - Manchester United

The iconic Aguero moment. Manchester United and Manchester City were tied on points heading into the final match day. United were away to Sunderland while City were hosting Queens Park Rangers.

An early Wayne Rooney goal at the Stadium of light put Sir Alex Ferguson's side on course to glory only for Sergio Aguero to undo everything with a last-gasp winner at the Etihad.

A change of fortunes would see Ferguson claim a 14th Premier League title.

2013/2014 - Liverpool

If City were to be stripped of this title, the biggest takeaway would be Steven Gerrard finally getting his hands on a Premier League crown.

The Liverpool skipper slipped against Chelsea, probably one of his biggest regrets ever, to open the way for Manchester City to win their second title of the new ownership under Manuel Pellegrini.

Liverpool was at that time being coached by current Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers.

2017/2018 - Manchester United

This was the first title of the Pep Guardiola reign in England. Jose Mourinho's Manchester United finished a distant second with Guardiola's City becoming the first team to hit 100 points.

Mourinho made a famous quote later on saying that finishing second in that United squad was the biggest achievement of his career. This is a coach who has won the Champions League with Porto by the way. Imagine if City's title was to be revoked and Mourinho's side was awarded the title.

The Special One would treat us to comical and witty press conferences.

For now, the world waits to learn of the fate of Manchester City. There is no set timeline on when to expect the verdict. It can be the next minute, tomorrow, after two weeks or after three months.

Teams Pep Guardiola can join if he leaves City

Sports Brief had earlier reported that last year, Pep Guardiola threatened to walk away from Manchester City if they ever lied to him about any financial wrongdoings.

With the club now at risk of being suspended among other possible repercussions, we take a look at the clubs the Spanish Head Coach could join if he decides to make good his threat and leave.
