  • Granit Xhaka had to be physically restrained from fighting at the end of the North London derby
  • Xhaka was angered that his teammate Kieran Tierney was being accosted by Spurs players
  • Mikel Arteta stepped in before the situation escalated further after a huge win away from home

Granit Xhaka is highly-tempered. Never shies away from confrontations or duels. He always makes sure that be it an opponent player, his teammate, or a match official, his point has been passed across and passed clearly.

It's for this reason that he is always in the referee's books. His tackles are always as aggressive as his words and reactions. Against Tottenham Hotspur, he was raring to go. Were it not for Mikel Arteta, the Swiss skipper was ready to cause a scene.

For context, Spurs are Arsenal's eternal rivals. Both teams would rather lose to Southampton(no disrespect) but get bragging points in North London. That whole cliche of North Londonis either white or red is real.

EPL 2022/2023 title race

Moreso this season when Arsenal are firmly in the race to win their first Premier League title since 2004. The Gunners for has been so superior that they managed to complete a double over Spurs to underline their credentials as contenders.

After the final whistle, there was a little commotion towards the goal area where Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was. An altercation ensued between him and Richarlison with a fan assumed to be of the home side kicking the goalkeeper.

Fans and staff from both teams through the area trying to quell the tension. Arteta urged his players to walk away and go and celebrate with their fans on the other end.

However, Kieran Tierney remained behind and got trapped among Spurs players. As multiple videos on social media show, Xhaka looked back and realized Tierney's predicament and immediately walked back to help his teammate.

Arteta's interventions

Now with Xhaka, there is no telling that the situation would have escalated quickly. Diplomacy is not his strongest forte. Arteta immediately realised that he could be without his star midfielder for a couple of games and rushed in to dissuade him from doing whatever he was planning to do.

But Xhaka bows to the whims of no one. Arteta had a difficult time calming him down. He was entirely convinced that he needed to have a word or two with the people who had gotten hold of Tierney.

That's why despite his anger issues, he is captain material. He saw Tierney was in trouble and quickly wanted to jump in.

Were it not for Arteta perhaps we would be writing how many games Xhaka would be missing. In the middle of a title race? That would have been catastrophic.

Richarlison vs Tomiyasu

The derby was full of drama. For a player who featured for less than 20 minutes, Richarlison was heavily involved in the North London derby.

Known for his abrasive nature, Sports Brief reported that the Brazilian was making his first appearance since recovering from a thigh injury he picked up after World Cup duty with his country.

With Tottenham Hotspur trailing 2-0, Antonio Conte sent Richarlison on with the hope of coming back into the game. It wasn't meant to be, as the Gunners bagged the maximum points. However, the 25-year-old did make a nuisance of himself.
