Football managers are beginning to command hefty transfer fees if they switch clubs while under contracts with another, though more expensive than footballers.

Liverpool have identified Feyenoord manager Arne Slot as their choice to replace Jurgen Klopp, and they will pay a release clause to allow him to leave the Dutch club.

Sports Brief looks at the top five most expensive managers.

Top five most expensive managers

1. Julian Nagelsmann

Bayern Munich paid a world-record £21.7mil to RB Leipzig to sign Julian Nagelsmann in the summer of 2021, as reported by Give Me Sport. He was sacked in April 2023 after one Bundesliga title and two German Super Cups. He was replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who will also leave at the end of the season.

2. Graham Potter

It was shocking news to Chelsea fans when Todd Boehly sacked Tuchel in September 2022 and hired Graham Potter the following day. Per Evening Standard, the Blues paid Brighton £21.5mil compensation for the manager and his backroom staff. He was sacked on April 2, 2023.

3. Andre Villas-Boas

Roman Abramovich hoped to replicate his success when he hired Jose Mourinho from FC Porto by repeating the same with Villas-Boas. He paid £13.3mil to the Portuguese club but sacked the manager within eight months. His replacement, Roberto Di Matteo, won the club's first UEFA Champions League. He won the election to become Porto's president over the weekend.

4. Arne Slot

Per The Times, the Reds will pay £9.4m, including add-ons for Slot and his staff, making him the most expensive Dutch manager ever. As a player and manager, Liverpool will be his first football experience outside of the Netherlands.

5. Brendan Rodgers

Rodgers had prior experience in English football before moving to Celtic. He returned to England after Leicester City paid a £8.8m release clause. He repaid the fee by winning the 2021 FA Cup and Community Shield but left the club in a dangerous position, which eventually saw them get relegated. They regained promotion at the weekend.

Last 5 Eredivisie winning managers

Sports Brief analysed the last five Eredivisie-winning managers and how they performed outside of the Dutch league after Liverpool agreed to pay compensation to hire Slot.

The 45-year-old had not played or managed outside the Netherlands and could become the second active Dutch manager in the English top flight if Erik ten Hag keeps his job.
