Liverpool's slow start to the new season extended to the continental stage on Wednesday night as they were thrashed 4-1 by Napoli in their Group A Champions League opener.

The Reds have been underwhelming since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, with the side managing just nine points from six of their opening Premier League matches.

The Jurgen Klopp-tutored side were hoping to put their domestic woes behind them when they took their trip to Napoli to face the Italian giants in their group curtain-raiser.

However, the English giants could not see off Napoli, who have enjoyed a bright start to their season under Luciano Spalletti.

How Napoli sunk Liverpool in Naples

The hosts needed just five minutes after the kick-off to break the deadlock, with Piotr Zielinski finding the back of the net from the penalty spot.

Zambo Anguissa doubled the advantage at the half-hour mark with a powerful sidefoot, which he fired past a helpless Alisson Becker.

Giovanni Simeone ensured Napoli took a comfortable lead at the interval as he scored his side's third in the 44th minute.

Spalletti's charges picked from where they left after the break, with Zielinski grabbing his second of the night in the 47th minute.

While Luis Diaz managed to pull one back for Liverpool shortly after, it was not enough to inspire a comeback against a sturdy Napoli side who held firm to claim maximum points.
