What is Republic Day in Ghana?

Ghana's Republic Day is observed on July 1 every year.

The day commemorates the establishment of Ghana as a sovereign republic in the year 1960.

Though the nation gained independence from the British in 1957, it was only in 1960 that the country became a recognized, sovereign republic.

Republic Day is a Commemorative Day, hence it is not observed as a public holiday in Ghana.

Ghanaian players to have played in the Ligue 1

Among the tall list of Ghanaians to have played in the Ligue 1, current Black Stars centre-half Alexander Djiku holds the most appearance by a Ghanaian in the competition record with over 180 appearances.

His feat surpasses that of the Ayew brother, Andre and Jordan.

Former Chelsea icon Michael Essien is among a distinguished list of Ghanaian players to have won the Most Valuable Player of the Ligue 1 during his time with Olympique Lyon.

And three-time African Footballer of the Year Abedi Pele, contributed immensely to Marseille and France's only UEFA Champions League crown in 1993.

Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku sets incredible record in the French top-flight

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ghana defender Alexander Djiku has become the Ghanaian with the most appearances in the French Ligue 1 on Sunday.

The Black Stars defender played a key role as Strasbourg edged Lens 1-0 to climb up to fourth place in the French top flight.

A neatly converted penalty by Ludovic Ajorque was enough to hand the all-important victory for the home side at the Stade de la Meinau.
