The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed Finidi George as the new Super Eagles coach ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.

The former Nigerian international served as assistant coach to Jose Peseiro at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before taking up the managerial role on an interim basis during the last international break.

George, currently Enyimba FC mentor, led Nigeria to victory over Ghana but lost to Mali in Morocco.

NFF released an official statement on their website to confirm the appointment of Finidi as the new Super Eagles coach.

"The Board of Nigeria Football Federation on Monday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as Head Coach of the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles," NFF confirmed.
"George, who spent 20 months as assistant to José Santos Peseiro before the Portuguese voluntarily left the post following the accomplishment of Africa Cup of Nations runner-up position at Cote d'Ivoire 2023, took charge of the squad in interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco last month."

NFF failed to give details concerning the duration of the contract and also Finidi's backroom staff.

Finidi has a huge task at hand. The Super Eagles need to defeat Bafana Bafana and Benin Republic, as they are currently without a win in their first two games in the qualifiers.

Amokachi set for Super Eagles return

Sports Brief in another report stated that former Nigeria forward, Daniel Amokachi, is set to return as a member of the coaching staff of the Super Eagles.

The 51-year-old was part of the victorious Nigerian team at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa.

The former Everton forward is set to be named as an assistant to the incoming coach of the Super Eagles.
