Germany had thrashed Brazil 7-1 while Argentina had seen off the Netherlands on post-match penalties to set up a final at the Maracana Stadium in Rio.

The final was marked both by defensive solidity and profligacy with the 90 minutes ending goalless. Gonzalo Higuain was particularly guilty of missing huge chances that could have turned the game's tide.

In the interview with FIFA, Messi was shown some of his chances and he said as quoted by the Sport Bible.

I don’t know. What can I say… it’s a pity.
It’s a pity given all the chances we had in that game. We had the better chances and, well… we’ll regret the chances we had but couldn’t score for the rest of our lives.

Mario Goetze came off from the bench to score the only goal of the game and ensure Germany won their fourth World Cup.

Messi was named player of the tournament but that fell short of his objective of winning a trophy with his national side. He fumbled a couple of more times in Copa America before finally winning it last year.

Argentina will have another chance to win the World Cup this year in Qatar.

Luka Modric says Argentina are the World Cup favourites

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Luka Modric had touted Argentina as strong favourites to win the World Cup later this year. The Croatian captain has claimed that Argentina are a good team and the addition of Lionel Messi makes them practically unplayable.

Argentina have placed themselves in a prime position to win football’s greatest trophy by winning the Copa America and the Finalissima trophies.

The side will be hoping to go one better than their 2014 exploits where they reached the final and lost to Germany.
