  • Spain coach Luis Enrique has made it perfectly clear why Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea will not be part of his plans in the foreseeable future
  • The 31-year-old was once again named as the club's Players' Player of the Year award in what was a disastrous campaign
  • Enrique did not pull punches when it came to why he is out in the cold, pointing out De Gea's technical deficiencies as the main reason

Spain coach Luis Enrique was unflattering in describing why Manchester United goalkeeper De Gea remains out in the wilderness away from the national setup.

The 31-year-old was once again one of the Red Devils' top performers in the difficult post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. Having been a part of the Spanish side for several seasons, he then fell out of favour with Enrique in recent times.

The Mirror reported that Enrique has now stated that he prefers a goal-minder who is at ease with the ball at his feet, allowing the team to play the ball out from the back.

He said:

"A goalkeeper should start the play and generate the first superiority, they must dominate the aerial play. I need a goalkeeper that transmits peace and calmness to me - and that doesn’t mean they won’t make mistakes, errors are part of football. But what they generate I like a lot."

The Spanish mentor's current goalkeeping corps currently consists of starters Unai Simon, David Raya and Robert Sanchez, according to Goal.

De Gea is being tipped as one of the frontrunners tipped to replace the struggling Harry Maguire as club captain as Erik Ten Hag attempts a revolution at Old Trafford, as per the Daily Mail.

Man United stars to choose club's next captain to replace Harry Maguire

Incoming Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly given his players the power to choose their next captain.

As reported by Sports Brief, Ten Hag is under immense pressure to find a replacement for Harry Maguire after the skipper's underwhelming 2021/22 season.

The Red Devils could only manage a sixth-place finish in the Premier League as they ended the season without a trophy, with Maguire's own performances being criticised.
