  • Khanyisa Mayo scored a late freekick to give Cape Town City a win over Golden Arrows in the DStv Premiership
  • Cape Town City should have scored in the first half they dominated the first 45 minutes against Golden Arrows
  • Cape Town City moved up into the top 8 of the DStv Premiership log with a win over Golden Arrows

Cape Town City moved up to eighth in the DStv Premiership thanks to a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows.

Substitute, Khanyisa Mayo broke the deadlock with a beautiful freekick to give City the win.

Cape Town City only had themselves to blame for taking the lead in the first half. The Cape Town side dominated play, even if the shots on target didn’t reflect that.

New signings Darwin Gonzalez and Mogamat May were lively up front, putting the Golden Arrows defence under constant pressure.

In the 14th minute, Gonzalez unleashed a long-range shot which was saved by….

Five minutes later, Ntsikelelo Nxadi almost put Golden Arrows ahead, but his effort was deflected over the crossbar. City kept pushing forward and Gonzalez looked the most threatening. When he wasn’t trying to shoot, he was putting in beautiful crosses. At the half-hour mark, he put in a delightful ball that May couldn’t make contact with.

The two teams went into the break level and were level for much of the second half. Both sides had their fair chances but lacked that killer instinct.

The major talking point of the second half came when Thabani Zuke pulled Gonzalez who was heading past him. Cape Town City launched a counter-attack with Gonzalez bursting forward. He passed Zuke easily but the Golden Arrows player took two attempts to roughly pull him down.

Zuke was lucky to walk away with just a yellow for it. In the resulting play, Golden Arrows had a counterattack of their own. Nduduzo Sibiya burst towards goal and had a player free in the box, but he chose to shoot, pushing his shot wide.

Golden Arrows would pay for that miss when Zuke committed another foul, just outside the box. The player once again escaped being sent off. He did give away a freekick though. Up stepped Mayo and the midfielder dispatched the freekick expertly into the bottom corner to give Cape Town City the lead.

The Cape Town side would hold on to the lead to win, although they could have made it 2-0 at the very end. Mayo beat the offside trap and chipped an onrushing keeper but his attempt went just wide.

Maritzburg United beat Supersport United, Friday Samu inspires the Team of Choice to a determined win

Friday Samu inspired Maritzburg United to a famous win over Supersport United in the DStv Premiership. The first half belonged to Maritzburg United as they sought to get revenge for being knocked out in the Nedbank Cup by the visitors.

In a game that Sports Brief monitored, Maritzburg United started much stronger and looked more comfortable as the game progressed. The KwaZulu-Natal side played with a high tempo and kept control of the ball well in the early stages.

They were denied from taking the lead in the 10th minute when Ronwen Williams produced a brilliant save. Clayton Daniels put in a delightful cross from the left-wing which Friday Samu headed goalward. Williams had to dive quickly to the left to quick the ball out.
