  • The last 16 teams of the Nedbank Cup have been confirmed, with the televised draw to be conducted later today
  • Previous winners like Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Swallows FC, SuperSport United and TS Galaxy qualified for this phase of the competition
  • It will be an uncomfortable draw for these and other Premier Soccer League teams left, as they are evenly matched in numbers by teams from lower divisions

The last 16 teams remaining in this year's Nedbank Cup have been confirmed, with the draw set to take place later today.

Orlando Pirates, TS Galaxy, Mamelodi Sundowns, Swallows FC, TTM, Marumo Gallants, SuperSport United and Royal AM are the last remaining teams from the Premier Soccer League remaining in the tournament.

Joining them in the draw will be Black Eagles, Sinenkani, Platinum City Rovers, Mathaithai, NC Pros, Summerfield Dynamos, Venda Football Academy and the University of Pretoria from the lower leagues of South African football.

The PSL stated in a Facebook post that the draw for the round will be made this evening at 6pm. SuperSport confirmed that it would be broadcast on Channel 202 (SuperSport PSL).

In an unusual turn of events, there are exactly eight teams from the top division remaining in the competition. They will have to negotiate eight teams from the National First Division and ABC Motsepe League to get ever closer to the most prestigious cup competition in the country.

News24 reported that TS Galaxy, while still in the first division, was the first lower division team to win the tournament in 2019, when they upset cup kings Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 to win the dramatic final. The Rockets repeated the feat of beating the Amakhosi this past weekend as per the IOL.

TS Galaxy's lightning strikes twice as they embarrass Kaizer Chiefs in cup again

TS Galaxy claimed the big scalp of Kaizer Chiefs once more in the Nedbank Cup after running out 1-0 victors at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening to advance to the round of 16.

As reported on Sports Brief, Augustine Chidi Kwem scored the only goal of the game in the 54th minute as the Rockets produced another shock result against Amakhosi, having beaten them in the 2019 final.

Chiefs have now exited the tournament at the first hurdle in two successive seasons after being knocked out by Richards Bay in the round of 32 last year.
