- The team had defeated defending champions Algeria in the group phase and knocked out Mali in the second round to reach the quarter-finals
Vice President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue has rewarded the country’s national team with US$1.1 million for reaching the quarter-finals of the AFCON.
Equatorial Guinea made history by reaching the quarter-finals where they were eventually knocked out by Senegal after a 3-1 loss Eurosport reports.
Players and technical staff of the national team were received at the Presidential palace where they were bestowed with the silver and knight medal which is one of Equatorial Guinea’s highest national honours.
In a post on Twitter, renowned journalist Nuhu Adams captured the historic moments as the players also presented a national team jersey to the Vice President.
The Central African country had caused a major upset by beating defending champions Algeria in the group stage and also knocked out Mali in the Round of 16.

Meanwhile, Cameroon coach, Toni Conceicao is very optimistic of the Indomitable Lions chances of picking a final ticket against Egypt as both teams square up in the AFCON semi-final.
According to a report via Goal, Toni Conceicao says his players are motivated going into the semi-final clash and their objective is to emerge as African kings.
Host Cameroon have been very bullish in the tournament so far and have failed to win just once in the competition but face a stern test against Egypt led by Mohammed Salah.
