Hungary entered the 1954 edition as a favourite, with their dream team consisting of Ferenc Puskas, Sandor Kocsis, and Zoltan Czibor. They demolished West Germany 8-3 in the group stage before meeting again in the final.

Interestingly, Hungary took a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes, looking comfortable about lifting the title. However, Germany fought back and overturned the game to their favour, eventually winning 3-2, against all odds.

Defending champions Germany suffered a shocking defeat to South Korea, forcing them to exit early from the 2018 edition. The Germans lost 1-0 to Mexico in their opening fixture before beating Sweden 2-1 in their second game. They needed a win in their last match against South Korea to proceed to the knockout, but a spirited display by the Koreans sent them home, leaving their fans in tears.

8. Poland 7-0 Haiti (1974)

Haiti had a rough World Cup debut in 1974, conceding 14 goals and scoring only two in three matches. They lost 3-1 to Italy and 4-1 to Argentina in group 4, but their worse came against Poland (7-0). Haiti bowed out with arguably one of the most embarrassments in the tournament's history.
