Queiroz attended a local primary school before proceeding to Liceu Almirante Gago Coutinho Secondary school, Mozambique. After completing high school, he joined the University of Lourenco Marques where he pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later studied for a degree in Physical Education and a Masters in Sports Training Methodology.

Carlos Queiroz's coaching career

The Iran national team coach started his career as a goalkeeper in Mozambique. In April 1974, Carlos relocated to Portugal following the Carnation Revolution and the 1975 declaration of Mozambique’s independence.

Queiroz was appointed the Assistant Manager of Estoril-Praia in 1984. In 1989, he managed Portugal's Under 20 team, before becoming the senior national team coach in 1991. He had an impressive record of 14 wins in 31 matches. He also worked as the manager for the Portuguese Primeira Divisao team Sporting CP in 1994.

Additionally, the sports personality coached the NY/NJ MetroStars in the United States of America, and the Japanese team, Nagoya Grampus Eight. One of his achievements is authoring the Q-Report, which detailed the development of footballers in the USA.

In 1999, he went back to coaching national teams. He became the head coach of the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) before moving to South Africa as head coach in 2000. 2002 was a significant year in his career. He became a coach for Manchester United, where he worked alongside Alex Ferguson.

However, he only held this position for only one year before proceeding to Real Madrid as manager. Carlos Queiroz's career has seen him work with renowned personalities, including Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo. Unfortunately, he lost this job in May 2004 after being listed as a poorly performing football manager at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

The award-winning sports personality returned to Manchester United as an Assistant Manager in 2004 after signing a 3-year deal. He remained in the club until July 2008 when he left to manage the national Portuguese team. He started serving as the Iran national team coach in 2011 and also worked with them in 2018.

After exiting in 2019, he returned for the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup. Besides Iran, the father of two has also qualified South Africa and Portugal for the World Cup in 2002 and 2010 respectively.

Rumour has it that the Iran national coach was one of the reasons for former Captain Roy Keane's exit from Manchester United in November 2005. Keane said that the two had a decent relationship, but also had their differences during their time in the club.

So, what did Roy Keane say to Carlos Queiroz? Keane claimed the Assistant Manager was given too much responsibility, close enough to be the club manager, and did not agree with his tactics. One of the interviews on MUTV (Manchester United Television) featured an outburst by Roy aimed at Queiroz.

In another interview with ITV, Keane says of Queiroz,

Towards the end of my time at United, I found him really disrespectful to me, so we had a bit of a fall-out. He questioned my loyalty, so I told him where to go. One of my big regrets is I didn’t rip his head off. But yeah, he’s an excellent coach.

According to Top City Vibe, Queiroz is worth approximately $3,000,000. The bulk of his wealth is from his sporting pursuits. His other investments remain a well-kept secret. Carlos Queiroz's salary is not public. However, according to Iranwire.com, his contract with the Iranian national team is approximately $900,000.

Hollywood Magazine rated the Iran coach as the most expensive coach in the World Cup. Additionally, the Iranian team will reportedly earn $10 million from the FIFA economic committee, and Carlos will likely take home a significant portion of the amount.

Carlos Queiroz's press conference

During a press briefing held in November 2022, Carlos lost his cool and snapped at a female BBC reporter who had asked him about protestors in Iran at a Pre-Wales World Cup press conference. The 69-year-old asked the Sky journalist to pay him for answering a question about Iran's stance on women's rights, after which he walked out of the interview.

The incident, which came at a time when political temperatures were high in Iran, elicited different reactions online. The citizens were protesting the arrest of a 22-year-old woman, who, allegedly did not adhere to the country's dress code.
