Formula 1 descends 'Down Under' as anticipation builds for the imminent 2024 Australian Grand Prix.

A standout instance is Danish driver, Kevin Magnussen, who secured a remarkable second-place finish on his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2014.

The unpredictability of this event is already evident in the 2024 season, with Williams Racing announcing via social media that they will field only one car due to extensive damage sustained by Alex Albon's vehicle during Free Practice.

However, amidst this expected chaos, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc surprised by topping the charts in Free Practice 2, sparking speculation about his potential to outshine the Red Bull team on race day.

In light of these developments, Sports Brief highlights the recent winners of the tumultuous Australian Grand Prix, as the stage is again set for what promises to be another thrilling chapter in Formula 1 history.

Australian Grand Prix's past winners

Max Verstappen - 2023

In the 2023 edition of the race, the Dutch driver emerged victorious in a tumultuous event that began with 20 cars on the grid but saw only 12 reach the finish line due to a series of collisions and accidents.

Two red flags and subsequent restarts marked the race. However, the Red Bull Racing driver managed to secure the top step of the podium, ahead of both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.

Charles Leclerc - 2022

The Monegasque driver recorded his third career victory at the 2022 edition of the Grand Prix.

Throughout the race, the Ferrari driver was undoubtedly on another level. Things were made even easier for Leclerc when a fuel leak ensured Verstappen retired from the race.

Leclerc finished first, ahead of Sergio Perez and George Russell.

Valtterri Bottas - 2019

The Finnish driver was the last winner of the Australian Grand Prix in the turbo hybrid era, before the race at Albert Park was suspended for two years, due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Bottas, however, left fans buzzing with excitement with his remarkable performance, securing a commanding victory. He crossed the finish line over 20 seconds ahead of his then-teammate Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull's Verstappen.

Sebastian Vettel - 2018

The 2018 edition stands out as one of the most chaotic races ever held at Albert Park.

Five cars, including both Haas drivers, Magnussen and Romain Grosjean, failed to finish the Grand Prix.

However, amidst the chaos, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel emerged victorious, crossing the finish line ahead of Hamilton and his teammate Kimi Raikkonen.

Sebastian Vettel - 2017

The German driver was also on the top step of the podium in the 2017 edition of the race.

Vettel finished ahead of the then-Mercedes duo of Hamilton and Bottas.

The 2017 edition of the race wasn't any less chaotic, as seven cars also failed to make it to the finish line.

Drivers with the most podiums in Australia

Sports Brief previously compiled a list of the Formula 1 drivers with the most podium finishes at the Australian Grand Prix.

Leading the pack 'down under' is Hamilton, followed by the legendary Michael Schumacher.
