South Africa's middle-order duo of Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock were forced to put on a salvage operation as they saw the Proteas to 109-5 when play broke for tea on day three.

South Africa were languishing at 32-4 before the pair steadied the ship.

South Africa still trail India's total by 281 runs, Sport24 reported.

Quinton de Kock fell just before play broke for tea, top-scoring at that stage with 34. Shardul Thakur got the wicket of the dangerous De Kock, setting Twitter alight for his constant ability to get much-needed breakthroughs.

A tough session for South Africa despite duo's rescue operation

During the session, South Africa had only scored 88 runs from 31 overs, losing four wickets in the process. Quinton de Kock's wicket was the most prized, as many fans were hopeful that he could carry the Proteas closer to India's mammoth first-innings total.

Lungi Ngidi leads Protea fightback as India are skittled out after promising start

Lungi Ngidi took six wickets on the morning of day three as the Proteas fought back in the first test against India at Supersport Park, Sports Brief earlier reported.

India started day three on 272-3, hoping to build on their promising start.

Ngidi finished with figures of 71/6 as he ripped through the battling Indian batting lineup. KG Rabada joined in, taking three wickets while debutant Marco Jansen took his maiden test wicket.
