  • Ferdinand Omanyala will be out to right the wrongs at the Diamond League final
  • Omanyala will face new world 100m world champion Noah Lyles among other opponents
  • This season, he was his first ever Diamond League event when he triumphed in Monaco on July 21

Ferdinand Omanyala will be out to make amends when he takes to the track on Saturday, September 17, in the 100m Diamond League final at the Hayward Field in Eugene.

Omanyala has had a mixed season that saw him finish a disappointing seventh at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last month.

It was an underwhelming result for the Commonwealth Champion who, prior to Budapest, had posted satisfactory results with belief hitting an all-time high that he would be the first Kenyan to medal in the discipline.

The race was won by Noah Lyles(the first of his three), with Letsile Tebogo and Zharnel Hughes coming in second and third, respectively.

Omanyala has since raced at Continental Tour Gold meetings in Switzerland and Italy, where he lost to Jamaican Oblique Seville before getting his revenge in Croatia.

Omanyala's message ahead of Diamond League final

Normally boisterous before races, the 27-year-old was rather collected with his social media message ahead of the Eugene showdown.

"Thrown in all my cards. Only one left."

He will face Lyles once again, with Tebogo and Christian Coleman offering concrete opposition as well. Omanyala finished second in the cumulated Diamond League standings, tied with Akani Simbine. Fred Kerley, who topped the table, will surprisingly not be part of the start list in Eugene.

The other Kenyan to watch out for will be arguably the Athlete of the Year, Faith Kipyegon, who will be seeking to end the year with a bang. It has been a remarkable year for the double Olympic champion who broke the world records in her favourite 1500, 5000m and the mile record.

She then went to Budapest and defended her 1500m world title before winning the 5000m.

Diamond League entry lists

Sports Brief also reported on the Diamond League final start lists this weekend at the Prefontaine Classic, with the winner in every event taking home a trophy and $40,000.

Some of the stars that will be gracing the event are Femke Bol, Faith Kipyegon, Yulimar Rojas, Noah Lyles, Erriyon Knighton, Armand Duplantis, and many other top athletes.
