During the 90s, the storyline of the Brothers of Destruction was among the most popular narratives in WWE. Although it was fiction, most fans still believed that it was real. The creative narrative depicted that Paul Bearer knew The Undertaker's deepest and darkest secrets.

Following his win at WrestleMania 13, The Undertaker started a rivalry with his former manager, Paul Bearer, who claimed that the famed wrestler had murdered his brother and parents by burning them and that he was the only witness.

During Kane's debut, in a match between The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels, Kane wore a red mask and used the narrative as an advantage to attack The Undertaker with his move, the Taker's move.
