In 1978, the Sampras family relocated to Palos Verdes, California, after his father changed his career from a civil aerospace engineer for the US Air force to the Aviation industry. Petros has three siblings, Gus, Marion, and Stella. His elder sister Stella also has a passion for tennis. She is known for coaching the women's tennis team at UCLA.

Like many top sports personalities, Pete developed an interest in tennis at a very young age. He learnt from several experts like his idol Rod Laver at 11 and coach Robert Lansdorp.

Petros also signed up to the John Kramer Club, where he was spotted by Peter Fischer, an amateur coach and paediatrician. Fischer coached him till 1989.

Professional career

The legendary tennis star turned professional in 1988 at 16. He won his first major title at the 1990 US Open. The 50-year-old knocked out Thomas Muster, Ivan Lendl, and McEnroe before beating Andre Agassi (6-4, 6-3, 6-2).

Following the victory, Pete became the youngest-ever male singles champion (19 years and 28 days). He went on to win 14 Grand Slam titles in his career.
