Larry was born in Indiana on December 7, 1956, to his parents, Joe and Claudia Bird. His father passed away when he and his six siblings were young, and they grew up relatively poor. He turned to basketball to distract himself from family troubles.

Larry first made a name for himself playing in college at Indiana State University, leading the school to the NCAA tournament championship game in 1979 against Michigan State. They lost to Michigan and their star player Magic Johnson who would become Bird's rival throughout his NBA career.

Larry Bird took up coaching in 1997 with the Indiana Pacers. He achieved unprecedented success with the team leading them to the 1998 Eastern Conference and 2000 NBA finals. He was awarded the 1998 NBA Coach of the Year title for 1998. He stopped coaching in 2000 and remained with the team as an executive until 2022.
