He grew up in Lebanon and other Middle Eastern nations for most of his life. The Phoenix Suns selected Steve in the second round of the NBA draft in 1988. He joined the Chicago Bulls in 1993.

The Bulls made the playoffs in both the 1993–94 and 1994–95 seasons, but they could not advance to the Finals without Michael Jordan's participation for all of 1994 and much of 1995.

However, with Steve Kerr and Michael Jordan, the Bulls set an NBA record of 72–10 and won the 1996 NBA Finals over the Seattle SuperSonics. Kerr was dealt back to San Antonio on August 2, 2002, with Erick Barkley and a 2003 second-round selection.
