The San Diego Padres opened their series against the New York Yankees with a bang, beating them 5-1 on Friday night.

Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. helped the Padres deliver a statement win, launching a pair of homers that cleared the first deck at Yankee Stadium.

They hit the moonshots in back-to-back innings to blow the game wide open for the Padres.

Soto’s homer reaches second deck

Soto got the party started in the top of the fifth inning, blasting a towering home run toward the second deck in right field to give San Diego a 2-0 lead.

The baseball left Soto’s bat at 114.1 mph and carried 432 feet based on Statcast projections, per MLB.com.

Soto made Yankees pitcher Randy Vazquez pay after he tried to sneak a cut fastball past him on the inner half of the plate.

That was a bad pitch selection for Vazquez, as he had already thrown the cutter to Soto earlier in the at-bat.

Soto remembered that pitch well as he fouled it off his left knee. He said in an interview afterward that he doesn’t like fouling balls off himself, so he took all his madness out on the ball when the same pitch was thrown later in the at-bat.

Tatis hits majestic blast

Tatis didn’t want to be outdone by Soto, with the right fielder hitting a majestic two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning.

Tatis’ blast left his bat at 113.4 mph and carried a Statcast-projected 439 feet.

He sent Ron Marinaccio’s hanging changeup deep into left field. Just like Soto, Tatis celebrated his homer in style, flipping his bat toward San Diego’s dugout without looking.

Soto and Tatis’ homers helped the Padres win for the fourth time in their last five games.

Cole gets 2,000th K

Sports Brief recently reported on Gerrit Cole making history against the Orioles.

The Yankees ace recorded his 2,000th career strikeout in Tuesday’s game against Baltimore.

He became the third-fastest pitcher in MLB history to notch that milestone.
