  • Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark head into the final round of the US Open tied for the lead
  • Major champions Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler remain in contention for the title
  • Fowler squandered a huge opportunity to go into the final round with the solo lead

Rickie Fowler moved ever closer to winning his first major championship, firing a 70 on Saturday to grab a share of the lead after the third round of the 2023 U.S. Open.

He is currently tied with Wyndham Clark at ten under par.

However, Fowler ended the day on a sour note as he three-putted the 18th hole for a bogey.

That was a costly mistake for Fowler, who nearly birdied the hole with his long putt attempt. He then missed his comeback attempt for par as he carded his third bogey of the day.

Clark took full advantage of Fowler's miscue, making birdie on the last hole to grab a share of the 54-hole lead, per ESPN.

They will both be together again in the final pairing of the fourth round, with Fowler and Clark set to tee off at 5:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.

McIlroy and Scheffler lurking

Fowler and Clark won’t have it easy, though, in the final round, as two major champions put themselves in contention on Moving Day.

Rory McIlroy is just one shot back at nine under after recording a 69 on Saturday.

He was solid down the stretch, making one birdie and four pars in his final five holes to give himself a great shot at ending his nine-year major title drought.

McIlroy’s play in the closing holes was nowhere near the brilliance that 2022 Masters champ Scottie Scheffler displayed in the third round at Los Angeles Country Club.

Scheffler made history, becoming the first golfer to shoot 2-3 in the final two holes of a US Open round.

He sent the fans into a frenzy after holing out from the fairway on the 17th hole for an unlikely eagle. Scheffler then ended his round with a birdie 3 on the 18th to move within three shots of the lead.

McIlroy and Scheffler will be the penultimate pairing in the final round of the 2023 US Open.
