Rock-solid Strasbourg defender Alexander Djiku has been crowned Ghana's Player of the Year at the Ghana Football Awards held in Accra on Saturday night.

The French-born Ghanaian beat off competition from Arsenal star Thomas Partey, newly-signed Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Jojo Wollacot, Southampton's Mohammed Salisu and Daniel Amartey of Leicester City.

In a video posted on social media, the 27-year-old expressed delight in winning the award, thanking his club and national team teammates.

"I am happy and grateful to receive this award as the Ghana Player of the Year at the Ghana Football Awards," he said. "It's been a good year with my club, we finished sixth in the championship.

"The World Cup qualification is something I take pride in. I am happy to make my family proud. I sincerely want to thank Strasbourg and my country Ghana for this award."

Alexander Djiku was Ghana's brightest spot at a disastrous Africa Cup of Nations early this years and he was responsible for keeping the sharp attack of Nigeria quite in the World Cup play-offs.

His outstanding performances for both club and country has seen him emerge on the radar of Spanish clubs Sevilla and Villareal.

Meanwhile, Kumasi Asante Kotoko dominated the awards night with Prosper Ogum winning Coach of the Year while Nana Yaw Amponsah was named Chief Executive Officer of the Year.

Mizak Asante's brilliant solo goal in the Division Two league final for Golden Kicks against Mobile Phone People won the goal of the year.

Alexander Djiku marries girlfriend Heley in France

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ghana and Strasbourg centre-back, Alexander Djiku, has tied the knot with his longtime lover Heley at a ceremony in France.

The French-born Ghanaian was excused from the Black Stars team for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers to marry his girlfriend.

In videos posted on social media, the defender is seen in the company of his wife, his child and friends and family.
