According to IOL, the suspect is living in fear for his life, claiming that he was defending himself against Andries.

The victim's niece, Nadine Hartman said that he and four other people - including the alleged killer - were drinking at the Buntu tavern, located in the Klapmuts informal settlement, when the incident occurred.

Following the breaking out of a scuffle, Hartman said about the incident:

"They were first fighting with their fists. [The perpetrator] left the scene and returned moments later with a knife. He then stabbed Oshwin. People were then shouting and screaming, and the ambulance was called.”

A week after the tragic incident, Andries' distraught mother, Natasha said:

“He was leaning on my chest and gripping my hand, and that was the last time I felt his hold on me. His hand was still warm, but his feet were already cold. I was praying the whole time the car was rushing to the hospital, it was like the Fast and the Furious."

She said Andries' death was painful to the family.

"You can feel the void he left in the house. Oshwin was my everything. The reality that he is gone is yet to kick in.”

At the time of publication, the family was in the final stages of preparing for Andries' funeral.
