  • Highly-rated Zambian footballer Justin Shonga has been warned to get his act together or his career could go up in smoke
  • Shonga was one of 14 players released by Sekhukhune United as the club aims to balance the books while also raising the rest of the squad's quality
  • Disciplinary issues were a big problem for him while at the club, which was not something new with him since starting to ply his trade in South Africa

Zambian footballer Justin Shonga's current career trajectory in South Africa is a cause for concern back home.

The 25-year-old was one of 14 players who were released by Sekhukhune United last week. Not for the first time, disciplinary issues dogged his stay at Babina Noko.

According to FARPost, veteran Zambian coach Elijah Chikwanda urged this still-promising Shonga to catch a wake up while he still can before his career wastes away. The article revealed that reports from the Sekhukhune United camp were that the player had been repeatedly reprimanded for bad behaviour - including arriving at practices under the influence of alcohol.

Ckhikwanda said:

“When I hear of what is happening to Justin, I wonder what happened. I think somewhere; they did not manage him well. I hear disappointing stories. I am disappointed because Justin was so well behaved; he was a very disciplined player. I wonder what has happened to the talented young man. Let him come back to the normal Justin. He is a great player.”

In 2020 after the Covid-19 pandemic affected the sports calendar, Goal reported that Shonga, alongside Thembinkosi Lorch, were disciplined for breaching bio-bubble protocols while he was still at Orlando Pirates. The duo were dropped from the squad as a punishment, with this turn of events eventually seeing Pirates letting Shonga go.

Sekhukhune United’s Justin Shonga frustrates management, reports to training under the influence of alcohol

As reported on Sports Brief, Justin Shonga is not doing himself any favours at Sekhukhune United.

The Zambian striker is reported to be on borrowed time at the club due to his off-field antics.

Shonga has attended training under the influence of alcohol, just one of the few ways in which he has frustrated the management of the club.
