  • Jose Mourinho made a shock return to Italian football with AS Roma in 2021
  • He has helped reignite the fans after breaking a 14-year club trophy drought
  • His influence has helped the club become one of the league's most-watched

Jose Mourinho was unemployed only for a month after leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2021. He was a shocking appointment as manager of AS Roma before the delayed Euro 2020 in May that same year.

The Special One wasted no time ending the club's 14-year trophy drought, winning the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League in his first season - the club's first trophy since the 2008 Coppa Italia and their first European trophy.

His influence has brought more limelight to Italian football. He has been involved in many high-profile clashes with opposition managers, players, and even referees that have generated headlines in the Italian media and elsewhere in the world.

According to DAZN viewership data, released via Football Italia, the Giallorossi is the fourth most-viewed team in the first division. Sports Brief reveals who the others in the top 5 are.

1. Juventus

The Old Lady have won nine of the last 11 Scudetto titles and it is no surprise they are the most-viewed team this season. In the first 27 games of the term, they amassed 34,999,768 views at an average of 1,296,288 per game.

2. AC Milan

Defending champions, AC Milan comes second and is the only other team to average more than one million views per game. They recorded 29,198,532 views with an average of 1,081,427 per game.

3. Inter Milan

19-time Italian champion and 2021 Scudetto winners, Inter Milan come in third with 26,867,406 views, and their average falls slightly below one million per game at 995,089 views.

4. Roma

As reported by Roma Press, the club sold out the Stadio Olimpico for their UEFA Europa League game against Real Sociedad, the 26th consecutive time this season they have sold out the 60,000-capacity stadium.

Mourinho's team are not only selling out their home ground but they are also amassing numbers on television, garnering 25,201,512 views at an average of 933,389.

5. Napoli

The Neapolitans are 19 points clear of second-placed Lazio on the Serie A log. The team's dominance this season has helped them accumulate 25,174,927 views at 932,405 views per game.

Bologna, Salernitana, Spezia, Verona, and Empoli are the bottom five teams and average less than 400,000 views per game, according to Tutto Mercato.

Mourinho clashes with Lazio president

Sports Brief also reported on Mourinho clashing with Lazio's president in the dressing room after the Rome Derby, which ended in favour of the Sky Blues.

There were five red cards in the match, with three players and two officials sent off in the tense affair between the two clubs in the Italian capital city.

The former Chelsea boss was not on the touchline for the gripping capital encounter as he was still serving the second game of his two-match ban.
