Jose Mourinho has spoken highly of Ghanaian teen sensation Felix Afena-Gyan following his breakthrough campaign with Italian giants AS Roma.

The AS Roma manager gave the 19-year-old his first team debut when he came on as a second half substitute against Cagliari in November last year.

The Black Stars forward has not looked back since, with Jose Mourinho praising his talent while revealing why he bought him the pair of Balenciaga shoes.

"He was there, he didn't have a contract and he was coming all the time with fake trainers and all the guys there were having fun with him," Mourinho told BT Sports.

"The moment he came here and the moment he scored a winning goal, I had to say: Felix, it's time for the guys to stop bullying you, so let's buy a proper pair of shoes," he added.

"Now he signs a contract, he goes to Ghana national team and he has fun with the other guys because the other guys are not going to the World Cup, but he is. So in this moment things are changing."

Afena-Gyan will be part of Jose Mourinho's team for the Europa Conference League final in Tirana on Wednesday evening.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that AS Roma manager, Jose Mourinho has followed through on his promise to buy Afena-Gyan his most-wanted pair of footwear if he scored in Sunday's Genoa game.

There was a video of the Portuguese handing over the £670 (N368k) gift to the 18-year-old.

Afena-Gyan came off the bench with 15 minutes left on the clock to score the 2 goals that earned Roma all three points.
