Some fans were upset that Real Madrid were given another penalty, a seemingly common occurrence in recent games.

Los Blancos supporters were confident when the game went down to spot kicks however, considering the side's record when it comes to penalties.

Here's how social media reacted to Real Madrid’s win via a shootout.

@EiFSoccer:

"Real Madrid players laughing mid-penalty shootout perfectly exemplifies what this club is all about - they quite simply don’t feel pressure. Instead, they thrive under it."

@LuninRMA:

"The fact Real Madrid never lost in a competitive penalty shootout since 2012 is actually scary... but not for us."

@MmoaNkoaaa:

"Real Madrid couldn’t beat Valencia in 90mins but they think they can stand a chance with Barcelona?"

@DonBenzu:

"Real Madrid are pretty overpowered when it comes to penalties. Great shooters AND a great penalty stopper."

How Courtois saved Real Madrid

The reigning Super Cup champions were below their best again amid a difficult start to 2023, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois excelled.

He made crucial saves and denied Jose Gaya in the shootout, as Real Madrid advanced to play the winner from Barcelona or Real Betis on Thursday.

The La Liga champions, facing the Spanish Cup runners-up, had chances to win the game within 90 minutes but needed Courtois' stunning reflex save from Fran Perez in extra time.
