Numerous well-known players and faces travelled to Qatar with the Uruguay World Cup 2022 squad. Uruguay placed third in the CONMEBOL qualifying matches, behind Argentina and Brazil, and earned a spot in the 2022 World Cup. They have a long history in the competition, having hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1930, and taking home the trophy after defeating Argentina.

In 1950, they pulled off a stunning victory over Brazil at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium to win their second Jules Rimet trophy. After losing in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tournament to eventual winners France, Diego Alonso and his men were knocked out from the 2022 tournament's Group stage after drawing with Ghana, but finished at position 3 in the group. They competed in Group H against South Korea, Portugal, and Ghana.

Facundo Torres, who currently plays for MLS club Orlando City, and Ronald Araujo, who had been injured, were both healthy enough to play. Here's Uruguay's final World Cup roster of 26 players who represented the country:

Alonso typically deploys a 5-man midfield with two double pivots or a flat 4-man formation in the heart of the field. Typically, Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Torreira played as the defensive midfielders.

Since Federico Valverde has been in such fine form for Real Madrid, he contributed more in the forward role more than his usual deep-lying midfield position. The 24-year-old played alongside midfielders Matthias Vecino and Nicolas De La Cruz. Facundo Pellistri of Manchester United also played alongside Matthias.

It is no surprise that Uruguay played one of the best forward lines at the 2022 World Cup. Luis Suarez, at age 35, may be on the downside of his career, but he still possesses the kind of flair that makes him a defender's worst nightmare.

Under Jurgen Klopp's tutelage in Liverpool, the promising forward Darwin Nunez has emerged as a future star.
