FootballWorld Cup 2022: Peter Drury Describes Kylian Mbappe's Rise and Lionel Messi's Ascension
- The king and his heir-apparent were in fine form during the 2022 FIFA World Cup final
- Kylian Mbappe underlined himself as the next big thing while Messi put a cherry on top
- Legendary commentator Peter Drury colourfully described the duo's historic moments
With the football world working hard to catch its collective breath after a most dramatic FIFA World Cup final, English commentator Peter Drury was at his poetic best in describing the stars of the piece.
The revered wordsmith was on hand to wax lyrical about one of the greatest football matches - possibly the best World Cup final - ever witnessed for those fortunate enough to have watched from home.
With the post-match awards ceremony unfolding, Drury said of Golden Boot winner and hat-trick scorer Kylian Mbappe:
"After Ronaldo and Klose and Mueller and James Rodrigues and Harry Kane... Kylian Mbappe! This was to be the final of Messi or Mbapp - it turns out to be the final of them both. He scored a hat-trick. He finished with eight goals. And was this not the prize he most craved? It is one of which he should be enormously proud.

Drury added that at only 24 years old, Mbappe has a World Cup winner's medal and would soon also possess a World Cup runners-up medal.
When Lionel Messi stepped up to collect his Player of the Tournament gong, Drury said:
"Guess who? Guess who? Rossi. Maradona. Schillaci. Romario. Ronaldo. Oliver Kahn. Diego Forlan. Messi - miserably in 2014. Modric and Messi again! And this time, he wants it."
Drury described Messi as 'beautiful' and as always being 'the point of difference'.
"Unparalleled, and maybe today, there always be those who argue. Always, those who will debate. And the debate can rage on if you like. But as he falls in love with the object in the world his heart most desired, it is hard to escape the supposition that he has rendered himself today the greatest of all time."

FootballDrury's commentary on Messi's Mundial
British commentator Drury had the perfect words to describe Messi's 2022 World Cup triumph with Argentina.
The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner led the South Americans to their first World Cup success in 36 years, after netting a brace in the final against France, despite Kylian Mbappe forcing the game to penalties with a sensational hat-trick.
Messi had the last laugh however, as goalkeeper Emi Martinez produced a heroic performance in the shootout to help his side to victory.
