  • Winning the CAF Confederations Cup will see Orlando Pirates enjoy a payday that would please any sea-robber
  • The Buccaneers defeated Al Ahly 2-0 in the first leg of the semifinal against Al Ahly Tripoli in Libya last night
  • By getting this far, Pirates has already guaranteed itself nearly R10 million in prize money as the club seeks a first title in this particular competition

Should Orlando Pirates win the CAF Confederations Cup, it will be a payday of note for the Sea Robbers.

The Buccaneers comfortably defeated Al Ahly Tripoli 2-0 in the first leg of the semifinal in Libya last night. Already, Pirates have bagged US$450 000 just for reaching this stage, which is approximately R7.27 million in South African money.

According to Kick Off, lifting the trophy of Africa's second-tier competition will bring in more than double this amount. The winner will walk away with $1.25 million (approximately R20.16 million), while the runners-up walk away with $625 000 (approximately R10.8 million).

Furthermore, if Pirates is successful in the competition, they will partake in the Super Cup against the winner of the Champions League, where $200 000 (R3.2 million) is up for grabs.

Unfortunately for Pirates, if they win the Confederation Cup that will not earn them the promotion ticket to play in the Champions League next season.

According to the CAF regulations on the competition, winners of the Confederation Cup only acquire the ticket to defend their title the following season instead of moving up the ranks to play in the Champions League like what happens in Europe with winners of the Europa League securing the right to play in the Champions League the following season.

The rule reads:

"The winner of CAF Confederation Cup must take part in the next edition of CAF Confederation Cup unless it is engaged in CAF Champions League of the same season"

Orlando Pirates thoroughly outplays Al Ahly Tripoli in 1st Leg of CAF Confederations Cup semifinal in Libya

Orlando Pirates was too good for Al Ahly Tripoli in the first leg of the CAF Confederations Cup at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Tripoli.

As reported by Sports Brief, the Buccaneers thoroughly outplayed Tripoli in a 2-0 victory. An eighth-minute goal from Innocent Maela and another from Goodman Mosele set the visitors on their way to what was a thoroughly convincing defeat of the visitors.

What did not hurt was that Ahly Tripoli fans were not allowed into the venue for hitherto unknown reasons, which Pirates took advantage of.
