  • Manchester United manager will reportedly be backed with a 70 million budget, a figure which could rise to £100 million if Ronaldo leaves
  • Ten Hag is still rebuilding his side and bolstered the squad with big-money signings like Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro
  • With that budget, Ten Hag could go back to his main target, Frenkie De Jong, who decided to stay in Barcelona

Manchester United will reportedly back manager Erik Ten Hag with a £70 million budget in January to bolster his squad. Moreover, the figure might go up if star player Cristiano Ronaldo leaves.

The Dutch manager was heavily backed in the summer but failed to land his main target Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong, a transfer saga that dominated the headlines.

Ten Hag's January budget could rise to £100 million

Manchester United will reportedly be backed in January according to The Sun with a £70 million budget to strengthen his side. In addition, the amount might rise if the Portuguese superstar leaves Old Trafford.

The Red Devils spent over £200 million in the summer, bringing in Antony, Lisandro Martinez Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro. Still, as the first two Premier League games showed, the squad is incomplete.

United chased a deal for De Jong in the summer but the players' wages dispute with Barcelona, and the transfer never materialized. With that budget, Ten Hag will expect to have a free run at his compatriot in January.

The Sun reports that the sum could rise to £100 million if Ronaldo, who is on £450,000 per week, exits the club.

Ronaldo expected to leave united this past summer but a suitable move never arrived for the 37-year-old, with the club insisting that he is not for sale.

It is believed that the former Ajax coach needs at least three first-team players for United to start challenging again.

De Jong could still leave Barcelona in January

Sports Brief earlier reported that Barcelona may sell De Jong in January after failing to move him on in January.

De Jong has a special relationship with the United boss. He managed him at Ajax, with the 25-year-old playing a critical role in Ajax's historic run in the Champions League in 2019.
