  • Barcelona will attempt to move midfielder Frenkie De Jong in January after a move to Manchester United crumbled in the summer transfer window
  • The Red Devils had reached an agreement with the Catalans in July but a dispute proved to be a stumbling block
  • The Dutch midfielder has played a part in Barca's all five fixtures in La Liga but has started just two games

The protracted transfer saga involving Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong could be resuscitated in January with the Catalans willing to try and move him on, again.

The 25-year-old proposed move to Manchester United was halfway done in July but a dispute about wages meant he had to stay at Camp Nou. United needed to boost their midfield for the incoming manager Erik Ten Hag

Move to Manchester United collapsed in July

According to 90min, the Blaugrana will try to sell the midfielder who is admired by major European teams, especially Chelsea and Manchester United. Deferred wages of €17 million stalled his move to United in July. De Jong was eager to be reunited with his former manager Erik Ten Hag and his former teammate Lisandro Martinez at Old Trafford.

Furthermore, the Spanish giants threatened legal action over the midfielder's contract. The club said that his current contract, given by the previous administration was illegal. A two-year extension until 2026 is reported to have reduced his salary for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 seasons. As a result €18 million was left to be spread across the following four campaigns.

Bit part role for Barcelona this season

De Jong has seen sporadic football action this season for Barcelona, a club burdened by a huge financial crisis. He has started just two matches all season but has featured in all of them.

Barcelona manager Xavi reiterated before that De Jong is an important player for him but the situation is out of his hands and he's unsure of what will happen to him.

Sports Brief earlier reported that late in the transfer window, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich wanted to hijack the deal for De Jong but were unsuccessful.

Bayern were willing to sign the Dutch star in a loan deal similar to the one for Phillipe Coutinho in 2019.
