  • Manchester City returned to Premier League action with a 3-1 win over Leeds United
  • Erling Haaland scored twice on return to the city of his birth and his dad's former club
  • Guardiola lost his cool in the close of the match and kicked a bottle at the Leeds bench

Manchester City and Leeds United played the last of the first round of matches, in the Premier League's return to action after the Qatar 2022 World Cup break.

The Citizens got a 3-1 win at Elland Road, despite a difficult first half that saw disciplined defensive play from Leeds. Spanish midfielder Rodri broke the deadlock in the additional minutes of the first half.

Leeds-born Erling Haaland scored twice in the second half, both assisted by former Aston Villa attacker Jack Grealish. The Yorkshire club pulled one back later on and almost got another, much to the frustration of Man City boss Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola's in-game anger moment

Guardiola lost his cool during the match, despite his team leading 3-1 in the 82nd minute of the game. The match ended with the scoreline unchanged.

As noted by the Telegraph, the Spaniard was furious with his players for giving up a transition, which resulted in Leeds United almost scoring from a free kick.

He angrily kicked a bottle which soared towards the Leeds bench, prompting the Man City boss to rush over and apologise.

The defending champions sit second, five points behind Arsenal who beat West Ham in a London derby on Tuesday - a club managed by Guardiola's protege and former assistant, Mikel Arteta.

Guardiola slams 'overweight' Kalvin Philips

Sports Brief earlier reported that Guardiola called Kalvin Philips overweight and said he could not train, after he returned from World Cup duties with England.

The former Leeds United midfielder has been mostly injured, and has not really played any part for City since his £42m move in the summer.

He sat on the bench throughout the match against his former club, as Haaland outshone his history with Leeds to find the back of the net twice.
