Manchester City and Sporting Lisbon played out to a goalless draw in last night’s UEFA Champions League match, but all talk has been about one man; Scott Carson.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper came on from the bench for his first appearance in 17 years in the Champions League, last playing for Liverpool in the 2004/2005 season.

Carson’s appearance in that year’s competition also saw him earn a Champions League medal as Liverpool went on to beat AC Milan in the final.

With Manchester City all but in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Pep Guardiola brought on Carson for a historic appearance, as he replaced Ederson in the second half, The Manchester Evening News reported.

While his appearance had many stunned, some fans have blasted Manchester City for being disrespectful towards the Champions League and Sporting Lisbon, reported the Daily Star. The publication noted that some fans felt Pep was treating the match like a joke and was trying to get attention back on a boring game.

Others were just happy to soak in the moment and took to social media to point out that Carson had more Champions League medals than his teammates.

Manchester City have progressed to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. City drew 0-0 with Sporting Lisbon but still qualified for the next round thanks to their 5-0 drubbing of the Portuguese side in Portugal.

During the game, Manchester City didn’t look like a team that were five goals ahead in the tie, as they pushed forward constantly. In a game that Sports Brief monitored, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling arguably had City’s best chances in the first half, as they threatened the Sporting Lisbon goal but never really tested Antonio Adán in goal.

In the 23rd minute, Jesus fed a ball across the goal towards Sterling but the Englishman could not get onto the end of it. Ten minutes later Phil Foden had a shot on goal but it was comfortably dealt with by Adán.
