Eight Clubs Revealed for First Ever African Super League Edition

The first participating teams in the inaugural edition of the tournament have been revealed. They are Mamelodi Sundowns, (South Africa), Petro de Luanda (Angola), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Horoya (Guinea), Wydad Atheltic Club (Morocco), Simba SC (Tanzania) and Esperance de Tunis (Tunisia). Egypt's Al Ahly is believed to make up the group of eight, but their participation in the tournament is still up in the air.

According to iDiski Times, Mazembe replaced Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca. It appears other South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were not invited to the tournament or perhaps turned down their invitations.

The tournament will consist of one group of eight in the 2023-24 window, with the participants playing each other on a home-and-away basis. The winner will get a spot at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The extended version of the competition will now accept four African teams starting that season.

There is no indication of how this new competition will affect the current CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations League tournaments.

The Africa Super League has already won itself a high-profile fan.
