He said to BBC Sport Africa:

"I would love to see an African player compete against the best players in the world, because it's been too long since we had an African win the Ballon d'Or."

McCarthy admitted that while African football is brilliant, it is not on the same level as European football.

"The speed and the technical side are different to what players are used to in Africa. I think the Super League will remove that barrier by making African football more competitive."

However, his compatriot John Comitis - the chairman of Cape Town City - was not pleased after its announcement last August, saying bluntly to Sport24:

"The Super League will kill African club football. You can switch off the lights on the domestic leagues."

Around $100 million (R1.66 billion) will be the available prize money for the teams fortunate enough to make the cut, with the winner walking away with a cool $11.5 million (R186 million).

CAF launches African Super League

The Confederation of African Football or CAF has launched a new competition for football - the Africa Super League.

The tournament will be played by the elite teams on the continent, with the winner of the inaugural edition earning $100 million.

The competition is expected to start later this month, as CAF announces the teams that will participate.

McCarthy praised for Rashford's revival

Marcus Rashford is delivering the goods for the resurgent Manchester United this season, Sports Brief reported.

His fine form has been partially attributed to the work of United's forwards coach Benni McCarthy. The South African legend received praise for his work with the striker.

Numerous fans took to social media recently to laud McCarthy for aiding Rashford in his transformation at the Red Devils.
