"They could be very good at rugby, even world-beaters": Lungisani Ndlela comments on South African strikers

South Africa’s current crop of football strikers should instead take up playing rugby.

Those are the views of former Mamelodi Sundowns player Lungisani Ndlela.

Ndlela, a 2-metre tall striker who represented Bafana, Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns, criticised the current batch of strikers the country has produced.

As reported by KickOff, Ndlela said that the strikers had a kicking technique better suited to rugby.

"At the moment, with the technique, they are using they could be very good at rugby, even world-beaters," he said.

Ndlela added that new strikers needed to be developed from a young age. He also had advice for the country’s current striking options.

“With the current crop we will never get it right. Just look at their kicking and heading technique. My advice is they must just forget about everything else and concentrate on scoring goals.”

There is only one South African in the top three players competing for the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot in the Premier Soccer League this season.

Namibia’s Peter Shalulile leads the way with 21 goals, WorldFootball.net reported. South Africa’s Victor Letsoalo finds himself in second place on 14 goals, but 6 of those came from penalties. Cameroon’s Bienvenu Eva Nga is in third with 10 goals. Both Shalulile and Eva Nga have not scored any penalties either.

The rest of the top 10, vying for the Golden Boot, is dominated by South Africans, but their stats are not much to speak off. Mxolisi Macuphu occupies fourth place but has only scored 8 goals.

The red-hot Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile is on the verge of doing something no player in the Premier Soccer League has done in 10 years, Sports Brief earlier reported.

Last night's hat-trick against Moroka Swallows took the Namibian goal-poacher to 18 league goals this campaign. He has six matches to reach the now-magical 20-goal mark.

The last time a player did that was Siyabonga Nomvethe, who netted 20 times for Moroka Swallows in the 2011/12 Absa Premiership campaign. Since then, few players have come close, with four of these players - including Shalulile a few seasons ago - hitting 16 goals.
