  • Kaizer Chiefs has been accused of nepotism when it comes to the instalment of family members in key positions at the club
  • This comes as the club goes through its worst trophy drought since its establishment in 1970
  • The team has also started the new season poorly, which has led to rumblings of discontent about where the great institution is headed

Kaizer Chiefs has come in for criticism for what has been described as nepotism as the club goes nowhere fast.

The Amakhosi have gone seven years without any silverware, the longest the "cup kings of South Africa" have not lifted a trophy since inception in 2015. The side is also experiencing an unsatisfactory start to the new season under the tutelage of Arthur Zwane, lying above the relegation zone on the DStv Premiership league table in 14th place.

Addressing this, an uncompromising Herman Gibbs wrote on IOL:

"For many years, Chiefs earned the title of aristocrats of South African football, but its relevance pales into insignificance these days because the club has not won a trophy in seven years. Arthur Zwane was handed the coach’s position by the Chiefs hierarchy, which includes team manager Bobby Motaung and sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr.

"They are not occupying those positions because they emerged from a list of qualified candidates who applied after the posts were advertised. Rather, those key positions were awarded due to pure nepotism as the incumbents are the sons of Kaizer Motaung. They have never been held accountable for the team’s poor performances in recent years."

Gibbs referenced the doomed coaching spells of Stuart Baxter and Gavin Hunt in suggesting that the club was in self-sabotage mode because of allegations that there was interference from the powers-that-be in their duties.

Bobby Motaung, the club's football manager, infamously stated on record that the club was a family business in 2011 in a statement many on the local football scene have not forgotten and might never forgive.

Arthur Zwane retains the backing of Kaizer Chiefs management despite a poor start with the Amakhosi

Kaizer Chiefs has had a bad start to the season under new permanent coach Arthur Zwane.

However, despite finding themselves in an embarrassing 14th place on the DStv Premiership table, he still enjoys the backing of the club's management, Sports Brief reported.

A source inside the club said that management believes that Zwane will turn the team's fortunes soon enough.
