Goalkeeping Legend Itumeleng Khune Hits Magical One Million Follower Mark on Instagram

  • Khune reached the landmark over the weekend, having hovered on the 999 000 mark since December last year
  • The only other confirmed sportspeople in the country to have over a million followers on Instagram are cricketers AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, Kevin Pietersen and Faf du Plessis

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper and former Bafana Bafana Itumeleng Khune made history by becoming the first South African football player to gain one million followers on Instagram.

Khune had been hovering near that number for a while, but he eventually hit it this past weekend. This was in the wake of his much-anticipated appearance in the DStv Compact Cup.

Khune celebrated the landmark with two separate posts on his Instagram page.

The first one read:

"Thank you all for the love and support. You are highly appreciated by me. Stay blessed."

The other one was of Khune thanking his wife Sphelele Makhunga for a surprise celebration, saying:

"Thank you wifey @laaylaymak and your team @eminence_eventplanner @siphokhune and @donny_mokwena for a lovely surprise. #1millionitis"

The only South African sportspeople with over a million followers on the app are cricketers AB de Villiers, Kevin Pietersen, Dale Steyn and Faf du Plessis.

DStv Compact Cup serves up exciting action, Warriors and Coastal United reach final

While he scored a win on social media, Itumeleng Khune did what he knows best as he and the Warriors reached the final of the DStv Compact Cup.

As reported on Sports Brief, United booked their place alongside Warriors with thrilling wins over Dinaledi and Amabutho at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Coastal United saw off Dinaledi in the first game. Dinaledi had the more attacking set-up and were expected to dominate, but they lost 3-0, Goal.Com.

Warriors overcame a strong Amabutho side 2-1 in the second semifinal, KickOff confirmed. Khune was in excellent form as he showed that he still has what it takes to be a number one choice keeper as he kept the Warriors in the lead.
