Lukaku’s interview with Sky Sport Italia, which was recorded weeks ago but only aired on Thursday, December 30, has since gone viral for all the controversial reasons.

In the interview, Lukaku seemed to suggest Chelsea were his fourth choice club to sign for in the summer, and went ahead to admit he did not like the way he left the San Siro.

With Inter, Lukaku had one of the most prolific stints in his nomadic career as he bagged 24 league goals under Antonio Conte to help his side clinch the Serie A last season.

In the interview, Lukaku said, "I don't think any of it should have happened the way it did. The way I left Inter and the way I communicated with the Inter fans.

“I'm annoyed about that because it's not the right time now but it wasn't the right time when I left either.

I always said that I love Inter and I'll play for them again. I really hope so. I fell in love with Italy,”

Despite his kind words towards the Serie A and Inter Milan, damage seems to already have been done as Inter Milan’s ultras issued what looked like a brutal rejoinder to the Belgian’s sentiments.

The fans appeared unimpressed by Lukaku’s apology and they took to make it clear through a banner outside the San Siro that read:

“It doesn’t matter who runs away in the rain, it matters who stays in the storm.
“Bye Romelu.”

Explosive interview

Lukaku’s interview has since elicited mixed reactions on social media, with many saying he should not have gone on record with some of his sentiments.

Aside from claiming he hoped to return to Inter one day, the 28-year old, who rejoined Chelsea for £97.5m, claimed Manchester City were interested in his services after his first season with Inter.

Tuchel’s response

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel also did not hold back in talking about Lukaku’s interview.

In a presser, the Blues gaffer expressed concern over Lukaku’s sentiments, saying “it brings noise that the club does not need”.

"Yes, we don't like it. It brings noise we don't need. It is not helpful but we don't want to make more of it than it actually is. It is very easy to take lines out of context, make headlines. I don't feel him unhappy, so I am surprised. We will not just read the headlines.” Tuchel said.
