  • Cape Town City have followed up on their threats to take action against the decision to reschedule Kaizer Chiefs' fixtures
  • Eric Tinkler confirmed that the club launched an official protest but that he was only focused on the fight for second place

Cape Town City have lodged an official protest against plans to reschedule their disputed fixture with Kaizer Chiefs.

The two sides were due to meet in December last year, but a Covid-19 outbreak at the Amakhosi’s facilities meant they could not honour the game.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) then charged them for that, but Chiefs approached the South African Football Association (SAFA) before the case could be heard, and an arbitration ruling was found in their favour.

The PSL were then ordered to reschedule the fixtures Kaizer Chiefs did not play; one against Golden Arrows and one against Cape Town City.

The Citizens are not happy with the decision, though, and last week threatened to interdict the decision, saying that they were not consulted on the matter, Soccer Laduma reported. They have now taken action.

Cape Town City coach, Eric Tinkler, confirmed that the club lodged a protest against the decision that the fixture against the Amakhosi will be rescheduled, Goal.com reported.

Tinkler insists that he is not focused on the outcome of the protest and is instead zoned in on finishing in second place in the league.

“For me right now, I don’t even think about it. I think about the next game, which is Sundowns.”

Mamelodi Sundowns will host Cape Town City on 27 April, knowing that a win will put them on the verge of claiming their fifth consecutive DStv Premiership title.

Cape Town City also have a lot to play for as they are chasing a top-two finish and the CAF Champions League qualification that goes with it. They are currently third but are four points behind Royal AM, who occupy second.

They missed out on a golden chance to close to gap to MaMkhize's side when they drew with them in their last game, The South African reported.

Cape Town City unhappy with Premier Soccer League and Kaizer Chiefs ruling, deny that they agreed to a replay

The Premier Soccer League and Kaizer Chiefs may have come to an agreement, but Cape Town City are not happy about it. The two parties resolved that Kaizer Chiefs would play their remaining fixtures this season, despite the Premier Soccer League’s upcoming appeal against the Amakhosi’s arbitration ruling.

One of those fixtures is against Eric Tinkler’s Cape Town City, but the club is unhappy about contesting the fixture, Soccer Laduma reported. The club recently took to their social media accounts to release a statement stating that they disagree with the decision to reschedule the fixture.

Eric Tinkler also criticised the ongoing dispute, saying that it was ridiculous that the matter was unresolved. He also questioned why the rules applied to specific teams and not to others, Sports Brief earlier reported.
