The Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper produced a masterclass as he helped his side secure a draw against Bundesliga league leaders, Bayern Munich.

Sommer produced 19 saves against the champions as Monchengladbach were denied victory by an 83rd-minute goal from Leroy Sane.

As reported by Sporting News, Sommer’s 19 saves set a new Bundesliga record. The previous record was 14 saves, also against Bayern Munich, by FC Schalke’s Alexander Schwolow.

Sommer explained that they knew before the game that they would come under pressure from Bayern and expected a lot of crosses and shots.

" I’m happy that I put in a good performance for us and that we could take this point,” he said.

Sommer also received special praise from manager Daniel Farke who described his performance as world-class.

Monchengladbach are currently in sixth place on the table, two points behind the leaders Munich.

The reigning German champions were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at home to Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.

Before the game, the Bavarians have been in scintillating form this season, bagging goals across three wins, but they were met with a resolute goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
