What is the Super League?

The European Super League is a proposed competition which aims to take place annually between some of the biggest teams in Europe. It is seen as a breakaway from FIFA and UEFA rule and a rival to the Champions League.

Which teams are involved?

The original proposal for the ESL featured 12 European sides but currently, only three remain. Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus are still pushing ahead with plans for the formation of the breakaway competition.

The other teams pulled out following threats of punishment from FIFA and UEFA and backlash from fans.

Proposed sanctions against ESL teams

Sky Sports previously reported that FIFA and UEFA could block clubs from joining the ESL and also penalize players for being involved in it, as per EU law.

With the new judgement in place, they will no longer be able to do that.

@dancingken1:

"The Premier League is already the Super League. European clubs just desperately trying to keep up."

English teams interested in ESL

Sports Brief previously reported that Barcelona president Joan Laporta hasn't given up the dream of a European Super League.

Despite only Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus still pushing ahead with plans, Laporta believes that the competition will get off the ground.

The Barcelona president revealed that there are still English teams willing to join the breakaway league.
