  • Sports Brief has dug up a forgotten but significant moment in South African football history
  • Ahead of AFCON 2006 in Egypt, Ted Dumitru had a headache figuring out who to take with
  • SAFA and the PSL helped him organised a glorified trial match boasting the hottest talent

In January 2006, something unique and historic - that has never happened since - occurred at the King's Park Stadium in Durban.

The South African Football Association, with the help of Premier Soccer League clubs, held a trial match to finalise who would form part of the final 23-man squad to do duty at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The public had a rough idea of who would form part of the squad going to North Africa, but several places were still up for grabs, with many promising and in-form players looking to force coach Ted Dumitru's hand at a very late hour.

Thus, the Bafana Bafana XI versus Premier Soccer League XI match was devised.

Bafana striker signed by Burnley

Sports Brief also reported on new Burnley signing, Lyle Foster having once faced off against his new coach on the field of play.

Amazingly, Vincent Kompany and Foster were on opposite ends during the 2019/2020 season of the Belgian Pro League.

The 22-year-old South African was announced by the Lancashire side in a peculiar way this week, using a clip from the Shrek franchise.
