  • Lars Veldwijk was born in the Netherlands but qualified to play for South Africa through his paternal lineage
  • The striker has made seven appearances for Bafana Bafana but has yet to score for the national team
  • Fans have questioned whether the striker can continue his goalscoring form for his country as well as club

Lars Veldwijk has been on red hot goalscoring form for Suwon FC in South Korea, but fans are wondering whether he can do the same for Bafana Bafana.

The Dutch-born player qualified to play for South Africa through his paternal lineage but has only played 7 games for the country. He also failed to score in those 7 games.

In the South Korean League though, Veldwijk has scored 23 goals in 56 appearances for the club, and in 2021, he was the highest-scoring South African in the world, KickOff reported on their Facebook page.

The Sowetan LIVE also listed him as one of the top five South Africans who impressed abroad in 2021.

Fans though are unsure whether he can replicate that form for the national team. Others are unsure whether Bafana Coach, Hugo Broos, will even give the player a chance.

Here’s what fans had to say:

Hoekstra George:

"Tall physical striker, good finisher. We need a player like this to score goals he was not given enough chance though"

Ndumiso Ndiirra:

"Only good against those Korean clubs he failed in Europe and at Bafana. Plus he is only great for penalties no wonder why you see him many goals he is scoring penalties, struggles in open play."

Jerico Walesandawana Mpholo:

"With Broos as a coach forget my brother, that Madala believes in mediocre not top quality."

Alexis Ntlema

"I disagree with those who said he failed before at Bafana. He never got a chance in those 3 matches he played for the national team, coming on in the last minutes. The truth is he never was given a chance and he has to get it now"

Steven Sekgobela:

"Lars is the best striker"

Surprise Muhali:

"The man has been given enough time brah, but never scored even a single goal for the national team"

Banyana Banyana look to succeed where Bafana Bafana failed by qualifying for 2022 AWCON in Morocco

The South African women's national football team, Banyana Banyana, has its sights set on the African Women Cup of Nations and FIFA Women's World Cup qualification, Sports Brief recently reported.

Banyana Banyana will take on Algeria in Algiers in the second leg of their 2022 Women's AFCON qualifier, holding a crucial 2-0 lead. The match will take place on Wednesday, with the winner qualifying for the tournament to be hosted by Morocco in July.

South Africans had to stew in the disappointment of having to watch the recent 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon without Bafana Bafana to represent them. Banyana, on the other hand, have more than proven themselves as tournament qualifiers throughout their history.
