  • Former La Liga champions Atletico Madrid will welcome arch-rivals and newly-crowned kings Real Madrid to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium tonight in a blockbuster
  • Los Blancos don't really have much to play for but Madrid pride, while the Colchoneros will look to entrench themselves in a UEFA Champions League position
  • Madrid defeated Atletico in the corresponding fixture 2-0 last December at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu

Great rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will collide at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the headline clash of this weekend's La Liga action.

This fixture will sting for the Colchoneros, as Los Blancos dethroned their hated city rivals to become the champions of Spain for a record-extending 35th time. It remains to be seen whether the home side will give their visitors a guard of honour because of the context of the teams' history.

Diego Simeone's men will breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Real Betis lost 2-1 to Barcelona last night. Atletico is on 61 points in fourth place looking to cement their place in the UEFA Champions League spots, with an averted Betis victory likely to have complicated this matter.

Carlo Ancelotti's charges, on the other hand, are having a whale of a time. Besides sealing the title, they also knocked Manchester City out of the Champions League semifinals to book a date with Liverpool in Paris on 28 May.

With nothing but pride to play for and maintaining winning momentum ahead of that much-anticipated final, team selection for Ancelotti is something of interest for observers. Simeone will not miss the opportunity to pounce if a weakened Real team pitches up.

Barcelona will play in next season's UEFA Champions League.

As reported on Sports Brief, this comes after La Blaugrana defeated Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villamarín in Andalusia.

This was revenge for the visitors, as the hosts had defeated them 1-0 at the Nou Camp last December.
