  • Ghana Premier League giants Accra Hearts of Oak defeated Bibiani Gold Stars in a hard-fought one-nil victory
  • Samuel Inkoom's first-half strike was all Hearts of Oak needed to enhance their top-four chances
  • Inkoom's goal was his second of the campaign since joining the Phobians midway through the season

Defending Ghana Premier League champions Hearts of Oak edged Bibiani Gold Stars by a lone goal at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Samuel Inkoom's strike from the penalty spot was more than enough to secure the all-important three points at stake in the midweek league clash.

Prior to the midweek clash, the camp of the reigning league champions was hit with a mysterious sickness which led to several members of the team.

But a makeshift team assembled by coach Samuel Boadu began the game on the front foot and were rewarded for their efforts when ex-Asante Kotoko defender Samuel Inkoom slotted home from the penalty spot in the 11th minute.

The goal spurred the Phobians on but Gold Stars goalie Yaw Fufro repelled all attempts by the home side.

After recess, the tides turned with Gold Stars probing for an equalizer, however, a resolute Hearts defence led by skipper Mohammed Alhassan kept their opponents at bay to secure the much-needed win.

The hard-fought win sends the Phobians to third position.

Strange sickness rock Hearts camp

Hearts of Oak's preparations for the Ghana Premier League clash against Gold Stars FC have been hampered after several members of the squad went down with an illness.

According to GhanaWeb, about fifteen first-team players have been hospitalised after their FA Cup victory over Dreams FC on Sunday.

The Phobians came from behind to defeat the Dawu-based club 3-2 and reach the MTN FA Cup final for the second year in a row.

Hearts share the spoils with high-flying Bechem United

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Hearts of Oak fought to come from behind to draw 1-1 against Bechem United in the Ghana Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The home side took the lead through midfielder Emmanuel Owusu with a 30th-minute tap-in that went past Hearts of Oak goalie Richard Atta.

The Phobians drew level in the 46th minute after midfielder Suraj Seidu latched onto a long pass from Ansah Botchway and fired past Bechem United goalie Abdulai Iddrissu.
